Vintage Phonograph Print

This image is inspired by a musical windup toy I had as a little girl. I would put little plastic records on the player and lay down on my playroom shag carpet to listen. I loved memorizing the simple tunes and would stay there for what seemed like hours. The phonograph in this picture probably provided some Victorian child with endless hours of amusement. Ladies and their beaus might have danced to it’s lovely songs.

I enjoy the natural inconsistencies and wobbles that appear when a human tries to reproduce something precise and mechanical. My painting hand naturally shakes so this is visible in some of the lines.

Writing a story is fun to do!

You might have noticed the appearance of a lot more writing sprinkled throughout these pages… A special woman has given me the inspiration to wear the writer’s cap.  It’s my mother!

(painting of my mom in her ballgown circa 1986 by ‘Charis’)

I always wanted to be a writer but didn’t want to ‘journal’, write blindly and randomly.  It happened like this:  I had a picture of my tiny upholstered chair I wanted to submit to a blog.  I wrote a one paragraph artist statement to go with the photo.  Did not hear back.  Then a couple days later I submitted some images of my sculptures to my favorite store, John Derian.  While they were not interested in carrying my work because of the material, they were interested in the story I wrote about the pieces, which I expanded slightly.  I decided to put the story on my website and while writing, got completely lost in thought as my fingers independently clacked away.  Next thing I knew, I looked up at the red glowing sunset and found I had written, looking up  a 1000 word story!  It pretty much covers my entire childhood.  It gets to the root of my esthetic and totally unwound my strange relationship with my mother!  Ten years with shrinks didn’t do what one day at the keyboard accomplished.  If this experience sounds dramatic, it was.  I now count myself a writer and have a writer’s tip.  Get super tired and then go!  If you are self conscious, maybe its not the right time to write.  Actually I retract that, there’s NEVER a bad time to write! Just sit down when you don’t care and go for it, adding whatever strange details come to mind.  It’s working for me so far!  I’ve written a few stories already.  I am super stoked to share more stories with you as the days and months progress!

On a sidenote, I did submit the story to my favorite radio station on a whim.  I love whims because ‘on a whim’ they often materialize! So I am not embarassed to do things like that. I will keep you posted.
